Supply of Water-Kefir culture medium :

Unfortunately it is not that easy to get hold of a genuine Water-Kefir-grain. Some shopkeepers that have specialized in bio- and nature products offer Kefir-enzymes. These also consist of micro-organisms. However, the enzymes deplete rather quickly and so the joy with the Kefir-beverage does not last too long.

As far as I know you will not be able to buy a genuine Water-Kefir culture (Japanese crystals) from ordinary suppliers.

Since Kefir actually reproduces its owners often give away an “offspring” to their friends and acquaintances.

If you see no possibility to get an offspring yourself, you may wish to purchase a genuine culture medium for Water-Kefir on my order page, which includes a comprehensive manual.

If you have been provided with a Water-Kefir through an insecure channel then make sure that it is healthy and clean.

Sometimes there may be little dark grain coming from the use of figs or other dried fruit, but this is no indication of poor quality.

A healthy culture medium for Water-Kefir has the following features: :

Size : The individual pieces of grain can have a size somewhere between a pie and a hazel-nut. Often these pieces have grown together (to the size of a walnut)


Color :
milk like white but translucent

smell : neutral smell , maybe a little like yeast
appearance : The Water-Kefir grain should somewhat look like in the photo example


Should you get white powder then this is most likely to be the short-living Water-Kefir-enzymes

For Kefir-Lovers it is quite common to give away some surplus of their Kefir grain to good friends and acquaintances. You may want to check with your friends and surely you’ll find someone who appreciates this little natural drink.
